panafest 2015 Atonement Experience
Panafest is a biennial festival hosted in Ghana to celebrate and promote the ideals of unity and development. The festival is held for the enjoyment of Africans, people of African descent, and for all who are committed to the well being of Africans both on the continent and in the Diaspora. The festival involves historical reenactments and drama, cultural drumming, dancing and much more.
Panafest unites individuals and groups through arts and culture, and by highlighting the rich traditions of a people that have survived through years of change and movement. The 2015 Panafest event will be an extra special celebration, as it marks the 23rd year since the very first Panafest was held in 1992.
In addition to the Panafest festivities, this tour will take you on an emotional journey to the Northern Region of Ghana, where a special atonement ceremony will be held for the group. The ceremony, set in Salaga (a town used as a major slave market during the slave trade) is a truly moving experience. Atonement will be sealed by villagers washing the feet of slave descendants as an act of humility and a plea for forgiveness. This ceremony, designed by the villagers themselves, is a symbolic apology for the acts of their ancestors.
